Billing Policy
Effective Date: May 17, 2026 | Law Hired
This Billing Policy ("Policy") explains how Aequitas Technologies LLC, operating as Law Hired ("Law Hired," "we," "us," or "our") handles subscription fees, payment processing, disputes, refunds, and related billing matters. This Policy applies to all lawyers and clients who use the Law Hired platform ("Platform") and is incorporated into our Terms of Service.
1. Lawyer Subscription Fees
Law Hired offers tiered subscription plans for lawyers that provide access to different levels of platform features, including marketplace visibility, AI tools, case management, client communication, and analytics.
Plans: Available subscription tiers and their features are described on our Pricing page, accessible from your account settings. Plan details, pricing, and included features are subject to change with notice as described in Section 9.
Billing Cycle: Subscription fees are billed on a recurring basis — either monthly or annually, depending on the plan you select at signup. Annual plans are billed in full at the start of each billing period.
Auto-Renewal: Subscriptions automatically renew at the end of each billing cycle at the then-current subscription rate unless you cancel before the renewal date. You will receive a reminder email before your annual subscription renews.
Cancellation: You may cancel your subscription at any time through your account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period; you will retain access to your paid plan features until that date.
Upgrades and Downgrades: Upgrades to a higher-tier plan take effect immediately, with the price difference prorated for the remainder of the billing cycle. Downgrades take effect at the start of the next billing cycle.
2. No Platform Fee on Client Payments
Law Hired does not take a percentage of the legal fees you collect. Under the current Solo, Firm, and Scale plans, your flat monthly subscription is the only fee Law Hired charges you. The subscription is a software platform services fee for use of the technology.
Zero Law Hired Fee on Billings: Law Hired takes 0% of client-to-lawyer payments processed through the Platform. We do not deduct any percentage-based platform fee from your legal fees.
Processor Fees Are a Pass-Through: When a client pays by card, our payment processor (Stripe) charges its own standard processing fee — currently approximately 2.9% + 30¢ per card transaction. This fee is charged and retained by Stripe, not by Law Hired, and is the same category of fee you would pay with any card terminal or merchant account.
Remittance: After deduction of applicable Stripe processing fees, the net amount is remitted to your connected Stripe account according to your Stripe payout schedule, typically within 2–7 business days depending on your bank and account configuration.
Where to Review: Your subscription charges and your payment history are available in your account Billing settings and in the Payments section of your dashboard.
Subscription Is Separate: Your Law Hired subscription fee is billed directly to you on your plan's billing cycle and is unrelated to client payment volume.
3. Payment Methods
All payments on the Law Hired Platform — including lawyer subscription fees and client payments for legal services — are processed through Stripe, our third-party payment processor.
Accepted Payment Methods: We accept all major credit and debit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. Additional payment methods supported by Stripe (such as ACH bank transfers for eligible accounts) may be available where offered.
Card Data Security: Law Hired does not store, process, or transmit your full card number, CVV, or other sensitive payment credentials on our servers. All payment data is handled directly by Stripe and is subject to Stripe's PCI-DSS-compliant security infrastructure.
Stripe Connect for Lawyers: To receive client payments through the Platform, lawyers must connect a Stripe account (or create one through the Law Hired onboarding flow). Payouts are governed by Stripe's terms of service.
Currency: All transactions on the Platform are processed in U.S. Dollars (USD) unless otherwise specified.
Stripe Terms: By using the payment features of the Platform, you agree to Stripe's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, available at stripe.com. Law Hired is not responsible for payment failures, delays, or disputes that originate within Stripe's systems.
4. Billing Disputes
If you believe you have been incorrectly charged or that a billing error has occurred, please contact us before initiating a chargeback with your card issuer. Chargebacks initiated without first contacting Law Hired may result in account suspension.
How to Dispute: To dispute a charge, email legal@lawhired.com with your account email, the date and amount of the charge in question, a description of why you believe the charge is incorrect, and any supporting documentation.
Response Timeline: We will acknowledge your dispute within 2 business days and provide a substantive response within 10 business days of receiving your complete dispute information.
Investigation: We will review your dispute against our billing records, payment logs, and subscription history. If we determine an error occurred, we will issue a credit or refund as appropriate.
Chargebacks: If you initiate a chargeback with your card issuer without first contacting Law Hired and allowing us the opportunity to resolve the dispute, we reserve the right to suspend your account pending resolution and to contest the chargeback with supporting documentation.
5. Refund Policy
5.1 Subscription Fees
Subscription fees are generally non-refundable. However, we will issue refunds in the following limited circumstances:
Billing Error: If you were charged an incorrect amount due to a system error or billing mistake on Law Hired's part, we will refund the difference promptly upon verification.
Early Cancellation (No Activity Window): If you cancel your subscription within 7 days of your initial sign-up or renewal date and have not accessed any paid features, initiated any client matters, or used any platform tools during that period, you may request a full refund of that billing cycle's subscription fee. This window applies to first-time subscribers and annual renewal cancellations only.
Service Outages: If the Platform experiences an extended, unplanned outage (defined as more than 24 continuous hours of complete unavailability) during your billing period, you may request a prorated credit for the affected period.
No Refund for Voluntary Cancellation: Voluntary cancellation of a subscription outside the early cancellation window does not entitle you to a refund for any remaining portion of the billing period.
5.2 Client Payments and Processor Fees
Law Hired does not deduct any percentage-based platform fee from client-to-lawyer payments, so there is no Law Hired fee to refund on those payments. Refunds of legal fees to a client are a matter between the lawyer and the client and are initiated by the lawyer.
Payment processing fees charged by Stripe on the original transaction are governed by Stripe's terms. Stripe may or may not return its processing fee when a payment is refunded or charged back; Law Hired does not control and cannot reverse Stripe's processing fees.
6. Failed Payments
If a subscription payment fails — for example, due to an expired card, insufficient funds, or bank decline — the following process applies:
Notification: You will receive an immediate email notification when a payment fails, with instructions to update your payment method.
Grace Period: Law Hired provides a grace period of 7 calendar days following the original due date during which you may update your payment information without loss of access. During the grace period, your subscription remains active.
Retry Attempts: Law Hired and Stripe may automatically retry the failed payment up to three times during the grace period at 2-day intervals.
Suspension: If payment is not successfully collected within the 7-day grace period, your subscription will be downgraded to a free or limited-access tier, and certain platform features may become unavailable.
Reactivation: To reactivate your subscription after suspension due to non-payment, update your payment method in your account settings and authorize the outstanding charge. Your subscription will be reinstated upon successful payment.
Outstanding Balances: You remain responsible for all subscription fees that accrued prior to cancellation or suspension, even if your account was suspended due to non-payment.
7. Legal Fee Disputes Between Clients and Lawyers
Disputes about the amount, reasonableness, or circumstances of legal fees charged by a lawyer to a client are matters between the lawyer and the client, governed by their engagement agreement and applicable law. Law Hired does not mediate, arbitrate, or otherwise adjudicate legal fee disputes between lawyers and clients.
Engagement Agreement Controls: All legal fee matters are governed by the written engagement letter or fee agreement executed between the lawyer and client. Law Hired is not a party to that agreement.
State Bar Resources: Clients who believe they have been overcharged or treated unfairly with respect to legal fees may contact the relevant state bar association's fee arbitration program or client protection fund for assistance.
Platform's Limited Role: Law Hired processes payments as a technology facilitator only. Disputes about what work was done, whether fees were earned, or whether a refund of legal fees is owed are outside the scope of Law Hired's billing dispute process.
Law Hired Not Liable: Law Hired is not liable to clients for legal fees charged by lawyers, and is not liable to lawyers for clients who refuse to pay, except to the extent that a payment failure was caused by a technical error in the Platform's payment processing.
8. Taxes
You are solely responsible for determining, collecting, and remitting any applicable taxes associated with your use of the Platform and your provision of legal services through it.
Subscription Taxes: Law Hired may be required to collect sales tax, VAT, or similar taxes on subscription fees in certain jurisdictions. Where applicable, such taxes will be added to and displayed on your invoice.
Legal Services Income: Payments you receive from clients through the Platform constitute income for tax purposes. You are responsible for reporting this income and paying any applicable federal, state, or local taxes.
Tax Reporting: Law Hired or Stripe may issue Form 1099-K or other tax forms to lawyers who process payments above applicable IRS thresholds. You are responsible for providing accurate tax identification information through your Stripe account.
No Tax Advice: Nothing in this Policy constitutes tax advice. Consult a qualified tax professional for guidance specific to your situation.
9. Price Changes
Law Hired reserves the right to modify its fee structure at any time, subject to the following notice requirements:
Subscription Price Changes: We will provide at least 30 days' prior written notice of any increase to subscription prices. Notice will be delivered via email to your registered account address and posted in-platform. The new price will take effect at the start of your next billing cycle following the notice period.
Introduction of Any Fee on Billings: Law Hired currently charges no percentage fee on the legal fees you collect. If we were ever to introduce such a fee, we would provide at least 30 days' prior written notice before it took effect.
Acceptance: Your continued use of the Platform after the effective date of a price change constitutes your acceptance of the new pricing. If you do not accept the new pricing, you may cancel your subscription before the change takes effect.
Promotional Pricing: Introductory, promotional, or grandfathered pricing rates are valid only for the period specified at the time of signup. We reserve the right to discontinue promotional rates with appropriate notice.
